Servant Leadership

Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world. A servant-leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. You will know right away if you’re working with someone who is a servant first or someone who is a leader first and I knew the moment Namisha Patel-Vasanji discussed her vision for Junior League Baton Rouge and it’s members in an interview, but more so, I remember being impressed by the support she garnered from her employer and family as she was being considered to lead the organization as President. Namisha understood that the sacrifice she would be making wouldn’t be hers alone. It would be a family affair as she continued to work as a family law attorney, be a full time wife and mom to 2 beautiful kids AND serve in a leadership capacity. And thank goodness she did because this year has ended up being an unprecedented year of both triumph (The inaugural Women’s Leadership Conference turned luncheon, another successful Hollydays, winning the AJLI Diversity & Inclusion Award, etc.) and some slight tragedy with all of the canceled events due to Covid-19. Namisha lead us well and always put our members and our community first with each decision she was faced with this year.

Namisha hosted a few JLBR members at her home and there is a cutout of her head in her kitchen that serves as a stand in for her when she misses homework help or dinner time. I’m sure her husband Vishal has missed having his wife home and is happy to have her back in 7 short days! I hope he enjoys her while that lasts because there’s something I’ve learned about a servant leader...their service never stops. It evolves. I cannot wait to see what she (and her beautiful family) does next!
